The Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) is one of the two species of Night-Herons, the other being the Black-Crowned Night-Heron. Both species are usually nocturnal, hunting at night and roosting during the day. The Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron eats mostly crab, and the Black-Crowned Night-Heron eats mostly fish. The Yellow-Crowned have longer necks and stouter bills than the Black-Crowned Night-Herons. They measure about 24 inches in length and about 1.5 pounds in weight. They typically nest in bushes and trees.

This pair of Yellow Crowned Night Herons foraging and walking in tall grasses along water was photographed at Milford Point marsh adjacent to the Coastal Audubon Center at Milford Point, in Milford, Connecticut on 7-11-2015. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 VR2 telephoto lens coupled to a Nikon 1.4x Teleconverter (TC1.4) to capture this image. Settings: 1/1000 sec, f/10, ISO 400. I counted about 12 Yellow-Crowned Night-Herons in this marsh during the spring and summer of 2015.
